The SMH General Fund supports basic operations and provides a reserve for any new programs the Society might pursue to support professional activities in the military history discipline.

The Summer Seminar Fund supports the SMH Summer Seminar in Military History, a three-week in-residence experience for recent PhDs and advanced graduate students that emphasizes the military history's fundamental concepts and questions, contemporary concerns, and pedagogical approaches.

The Russell F. Weigley Fund honors one of the great American military historians of the 20th century by providing travel awards to promising graduate students presenting papers at the Society's annual meeting.

As of the 2022 annual meeting, Weigley Travel Grants have been presented to 100 outstanding graduate students who represent the future of military history.

The Allan R. Millett Dissertation Research Fellowship recognizes one of the field’s preeminent scholars and a prolific author who for more than four decades has shaped the public’s understanding of military history.

The Millett Dissertation Research Fellowship is awarded annually and provides an award of $750.00 for doctoral dissertation research on a topic in any field of military history.

The Edward M. Coffman Fund honors an eminent military historian whose scholarship has redefined our understanding of the United States Army.

The Coffman First-Manuscript Prize is awarded annually to an author who has not previously published a scholarly book-length manuscript on military history. Each year’s winning author receives a cash award, a plaque, and, after successful editorial review, a publication contract with the University of North Carolina Press.

The Society for Military History awards an annual graduate student travel grant to facilitate travel from overseas to the SMH conference, honoring Jeffery Grey’s long-standing commitment to extending the global reach of the SMH.

Members who wish to contribute to this initiative can make donations to the Jeffery Grey Fund. Members can also send checks to The Society for Military History, George C. Marshall Library,Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA 24450-1600. Please note that your donation is for the Jeffrey Grey Graduate Student Travel Account.

The Society for Military History supports graduate students with the Mark Grimsley SMH Fellowship in Social Media. This position honors Dr. Mark Grimsley, Associate Professor of History at the Ohio State University, a widely published scholar and leading pioneer in military history social media and academic blogging. The Grimsley Fellow serves a two-year term and is an active member of the Society's Facebook and Twitter Management Team, acting primarily to maintain the SMH presence on Twitter.
