New Executive Director Announced

The SMH Board of Trustees and Voting Officers is pleased to announce the appointment of C.C. Felker as the new Executive Director of the Society of Military History. Dr. Felker is an experienced administrator, an accomplished scholar, and a highly successful teacher. He recently retired from his position as a uniformed member of the faculty and chair of the U.S. Naval Academy History Department where he led both civilian and military historians. A long-standing member of the SMH, he is well-positioned to lead the SMH as we build on the organization’s strengths to ensure a bright future. 
A helicopter pilot, Dr. Felker has served as director of the President’s Emergency Center before moving onto the Naval Academy where he became executive assistant to the Director of Humanities and Social Sciences, United States Naval Academy and an Instructor in Departments of History, and Leadership, Ethics, and Law. In 2004, he received his Ph.D. in History from Duke University, and returned to the Naval Academy as a permanent military professor and eventually, chair. As a Navy captain, in 2010/2011 he also served as a command historian and commander of the U.S. Navy Detachment, NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan. 
Dr. Felker is the author of Testing American Sea Power: U.S. Navy Strategic Exercises, 1923-1940 (Texas A&M University Press, 2007), along with several essays in annotated anthologies. He has another book in press with Air University Press, No Moment of Victory: The NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan, which is co-authored with Martin Loicano. He serves as an editorial board member for U.S. Military History Review and is co-chair of the Secretary of the Navy’s Advisory Subcommittee on Naval History.
